PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

Platelet-rich plasma therapy, more commonly referred to as PRP, is a dynamic non-surgical treatment that can not only improve signs of facial aging, but also regenerate collagen lost from the aging process. The key to this facial rejuvenation is the growth factors in your own blood, which are purified and repurposed to achieve a more youthful aesthetic. At our San Antonio med spa, PRP injections can minimize fine lines, acne scars, sagging skin, and other key signs of age for results that often last longer than injectables.

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma is a component of your blood that is ample in natural growth factors. The properties in PRP contain healing capabilities that have often been used for medical purposes, such as the mending of injured tendons, ligaments, and joints. When repurposed for facial rejuvenation, the platelet-rich plasma separated from whole blood can be used to repair skin damage, promote production of new collagen, enhance a dull complexion, revive broken capillaries, and achieve other rejuvenating benefits. The process of isolating PRP from whole blood is simple: a small blood sample is spun in a centrifuge until the platelet-rich plasma is separated from white and red blood cells. The concentration of PRP is then carefully injected into targeted regions of the face, where the results should be evident over the following months.

What are the Benefits of PRP Injections?

Platelet-rich plasma can renew the skin texture and produce a fuller, more youthful facial appearance using your own tissue. This minimizes the risk of an allergic reaction, as no foreign products are being introduced to the body. While every patient experiences different results, PRP injections can generally:

PRP can also be combined with other skin therapies, such as laser skin resurfacing, to further improve acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and other skin concerns while maximizing the results of treatment.

How is PRP Treatment Performed?

PRP injections are administered in our treatment rooms at Ayala Plastic Surgery. Before injection, a small blood sample will be taken and placed in a centrifuge, where the platelet-rich plasma will be isolated from other components of your blood. The preparation process typically takes no longer than 20 minutes. Once the growth factors have been separated from the sample, the PRP will be injected into the treatment site(s) with an ultra-fine needle. Anesthesia is not necessary, but a local numbing agent can be applied before treatment to enhance patient comfort if desired. After injections, there is typically no downtime required and patients can resume their normal routines immediately.
