Tummy Tuck

A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals, no matter how hard you try.

Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Aging
  • Significant fluctuations in weight
  • Heredity
  • Prior surgery

General Information

Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.

The Procedure

A Tummy Tuck takes Dr. Ayala approximately 2-5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. You will either go home the same day or stay up to two nights in the hospital depending on your individual needs. The procedure is usually combined with liposuction of the love handles, upper abdomen and thighs.

Dr. Ayala starts by making two incisions in order to expose the abdominal muscles. After the abdominal muscles are exposed, they are pulled together and sutured. The skin is then stretched over the muscles; the excess skin is removed, followed by the closing of the incisions.

Recovery: What to Expect

Recovery from a tummy tuck takes anywhere from two weeks to two months. Most patients return to work within two to three weeks, but strenuous activity should be limited for at least six weeks.
