What Happens After Plastic Surgery? Post-Op FAQs

Making the decision to achieve your goals with plastic surgery is a big step. Our board-certified plastic surgeon in San Antonio understands you likely have many questions about what happens after an aesthetic procedure. From guidelines on managing discomfort to instructions regarding a return to your daily routine, knowing what to expect during the recovery process can make your journey much smoother and less stressful. Whether you’re pursuing breast augmentation, tummy tuck surgery, liposuction, or our spectrum of other high-quality cosmetic procedures, we’re committed to keeping you well-informed of the entire process. Here, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions raised by patients after a plastic surgery procedure.

When are sutures removed?

The timeline for suture removal depends on the kind of cosmetic surgery procedure performed and the type of sutures placed. Many modern surgeries use dissolvable stitches that don’t need to be removed — they simply break down naturally over time. If non-dissolvable sutures are used, they are usually removed within 5 to 14 days after surgery, depending on their location and Dr. Ayala’s protocol with regard to your unique treatment plan. It’s important to avoid picking, tugging, or scratching your sutures, as this can disrupt wound healing, delay recovery, and/or cause scarring.

When can I go back to work?

Most patients can return to light, office-based work within 5 to 10 days depending on the procedure performed and the nature of your job. Surgeries like a facelift, breast augmentation, and liposuction often require at least one week of downtime, while more extensive procedures like abdominoplasty, a Mommy Makeover, or a lower body lift may require 2 to 3 weeks off. More physically demanding jobs often require a longer recovery time before it’s safe to return to work and Dr. Ayala will monitor your progress in follow-up appointments. We recommend always listening to your body and the guidelines set by Dr. Ayala. Trying to rush the recovery process can delay healing.

When can I work out again after plastic surgery?

Generally, light walking is encouraged as soon as you feel up to it to promote circulation and blood flow; however, strenuous exercise, weightlifting, and core work should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. This timeframe gives your body time to heal properly and helps prevent complications like swelling, bleeding, or damage to internal sutures. Dr. Ayala will give you individual clearance based on your progress at your follow-up visits. Rest assured that you will receive comprehensive pre- and post-operative instructions

When can I shower after my procedure?

Most patients can usually shower approximately 48 to 72 hours after surgery, depending on the location of their incisions and whether drains/dressings are in place. We encourage you to allow water to hit your backside, but to minimize direct water exposure on your face and breasts. Bathing, swimming, and hot tubs are typically off-limits for two to four weeks, as soaking may increase the risks of infections and delay healing.

What can I expect with regard to bowel movements after surgery?

It’s not uncommon for pain medications taken after plastic surgery to limit or slow down bowel motility. Constipation, bloating, and abdominal distention are normal reactions. We encourage patients to only take pain medications as needed and in moderation to help minimize constipation. Consuming high-fiber meals, prunes, and stool softeners can also help in making bowel movements easier after surgery.

Is soreness normal after plastic surgery? How long will it last?

Some discomfort, soreness, swelling, and general tenderness are expected, especially in the first few days post-op. Dr. Ayala will prescribe pain medications and recommend over-the-counter options to manage discomfort. Many patients report soreness or tightness rather than sharp pain. These reactions should improve significantly within the first week. Cold compresses and keeping your head or body elevated can also help reduce discomfort and swelling.

When can I use skincare or wear makeup again?

For facial plastic surgery procedures, patients should avoid makeup and skincare products (like retinol or acids) near the incision areas for at least 1 to 2 weeks, or until the skin has fully healed. Once cleared by your Dr. Ayala, makeup can be used to camouflage bruising or redness. However, we recommend switching your old products for new cosmetics to limit bacteria exposure.

What should I expect at follow-up appointments?

Follow-up appointments typically occur one day and one week after surgery, with additional visits scheduled to monitor healing, remove sutures, and address concerns. These check-ins are essential to ensure your healing is progressing as expected.

When will swelling go down and results be visible?

Swelling is most noticeable during the first two weeks after surgery and gradually subsides over several months. Final results often take 3 to 6 months to fully settle, and even up to one year for some procedures like rhinoplasty. Patience is key!
